‘Meskel or Demera’—the finding of True Cross

Two weeks after we celebrate our New Year which is on the 11th of September, we will happily start celebrating another colorful and religiously important occasion, the Meskal or Finding of the true Cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified, by Queen Helen mother of Constantine the Great. It is celebrated by the Christian societies all over the country on the 27th of September (28th on Leap Year) every year. In Addis Ababa, it is more colorful on the eve as the most important part of the ceremony is firing the big bonfire on the center of Meskal square in the presence of Head Patriarch and other important dignitaries; all the participant will light a candle or wax-candle in the honor of the festival and that is amazing to see.
