Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa & City Tour
Upon arrival at Bole International Airport, a representative from Aspire Ethiopia Tours will meet you and transfer you to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time, you may explore a selection of Addis Ababa’s most iconic sites:

Day 2: Addis Ababa – Debre Libanos (134 km)
After breakfast, drive north across Mount Entoto with sweeping views over Addis Ababa, continuing across the Sululta plains to Debre Libanos (approx. 3 hours). Visit the historic Debre Libanos Monastery, one of Ethiopia’s most significant religious centers, complete with an adjoining museum showcasing ancient church artifacts.
Following lunch, enjoy a scenic walk to the famous Portuguese Bridge, offering dramatic views of the gorge and a 60-meter waterfall. The area is known for sightings of Gelada baboons (endemic to Ethiopia) and a variety of raptors and highland bird species.
Day 3: Debre Libanos – Bahir Dar (434 km)
Today’s journey leads through the fertile landscapes of Gojam and Fogera, offering picturesque views of farmland and villages. The route crosses the spectacular Blue Nile Gorge, one of Ethiopia’s most impressive natural features. Arrive in Bahir Dar in the late afternoon and enjoy a beautiful sunset from Bezawit Hill, home to one of Emperor Haile Selassie’s former palaces.
Day 4: Full Day in Bahir Dar
Take a boat trip on Lake Tana, the source of the Blue Nile, to visit the monasteries of the Zege Peninsula, including the iconic Ura Kidane Mihret. These 14th-century, round, thatched-roof churches are famous for their vivid wall murals, ancient manuscripts, royal regalia, and decorated processional crosses. The forested peninsula also offers opportunities to spot monkeys and rich birdlife.
After lunch, drive to the Blue Nile Falls, where the river plunges 45 meters into a smoking gorge. Return to Bahir Dar in the afternoon to explore the vibrant local market, known for exquisite handcrafts such as woven textiles, jewelry, and traditional baskets (Agelgil).
Day 5: Bahir Dar – Gondar (170 km)
After breakfast, drive to Gondar, Ethiopia’s 17th-century imperial capital, known for its medieval architecture and royal heritage.
Visit the Royal Enclosure (Fasil Ghebbi) with its impressive castles, followed by the extraordinary Debre Berhan Selassie Church, famous for its ceiling covered with painted angel faces an iconic masterpiece of Ethiopian sacred art.
Day 6: Gondar – Simien Mountains National Park (120 km)
Depart early for Simien Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its dramatic escarpments and endemic wildlife. After lunch at the lodge, explore the park around Sankaber (3,220 m), enjoying breathtaking views of cliffs, valleys, and waterfalls. Expect close encounters with Gelada baboons and possible sightings of the Walia ibex and Simien fox. Overnight in Debark.
Day 7: Simien Mountains National Park – Axum (244 km)
After breakfast, drive to Axum (approx. 7 hours), enjoying spectacular mountain and valley panoramas along the way. At an altitude of 1,637 m, Axum is regarded as the birthplace of Ethiopian civilization and the spiritual center of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
Day 8: Full Day in Axum

Day 9: Axum – Yeha – Mekele (337 km)
Drive to Yeha, passing through Adwa, the site of the decisive 1896 battle where Ethiopians defeated Italian invaders. Yeha is home to a remarkably preserved 2,500-year old pre-Axumite temple, famous for its monumental 12-meter stone walls.
Continue to Mekele, stopping to visit the rock-hewn churches of Wukro Cherkos and Abreha We Atsbeha, masterpieces of early Ethiopian Christianity.
Day 10: Mekele – Lalibela (432 km)
Drive through ever changing highland landscapes to Lalibela (approx. 8 hours). Arrive in the late afternoon and relax at your hotel.
Day 11: Full Day in Lalibela
Explore the world-famous 11 rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” Carved directly from volcanic rock, this remarkable complex includes Bet Medhane Alem (the largest monolithic church), Bet Mariam, Bet Golgotha, Bet Mikael, Bet Maskal, and Bet Danaghel.
Afternoon: Southern Cluster & St. George
Visit the second group of churches Bet Emanuel, Bet Mercurios, Bet Gabriel-Rufael, and Bet Aba Libanos followed by Bet Giyorgis, the most iconic and architecturally stunning of all the rock-hewn churches, accessed through a narrow tunnel.
Day 12: Lalibela – Dessie (289 km)
Begin the day with a visit to the cave monastery of Ne’akuto Le’ab, offering a serene spiritual atmosphere and sacred treasures. Continue to Dessie, stopping at Lake Hayk, known for its birdlife and the monastery of Istifanos (accessible to men only).
Overnight in Dessie.
Day 13: Dessie – Addis Ababa (387 km) & Departure
Drive north to Addis Ababa through scenic highlands and expansive plains. Upon arrival, a day room will be arranged for refreshment.
Evening, enjoy a festive farewell dinner at a traditional Ethiopian restaurant featuring cultural music and dance. Afterward, transfer to the airport for your international departure.
