Gishen Mariam—Commemoration of Saint Mary

Perhaps the most adventurous and breathtaking pilgrimage tour in Ethiopia, Gishen Mariam is celebrated on 1st of October in the Cross-shaped Mountains of Ambasel region. Driving 480Km North en route to the Lalibela Road, a junction and start of dirt Road at Desse will wait. It receives the highest number of pilgrims though the Climbing up to the top is the scariest of all, especially driving. Not famous for tourists as it is not usual for foreigners to overnight in absolute rural area: this is the most sacred place in Ethiopia as it houses the fragment of the True Cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified.
