Though a week isn’t enough to explore all the wonders of the Omo valley divers culture, this itinerary does its best, taking you fly down to Arba Minch to help you cut out one full day drive to get in there and going down to the Omo Valley peoples with the 4 WD car, passing through the magnificent Konso tribes and the colorful Kay Afer market, and proceed further down to the Mago national Park to see the Mursi tribes and on the same day arrive to Turmi for the spectacular cultural insights of the Hamer tribes.

After your immediate excursion in the early morning to the Karo tribes you drive came back to Arba Minch to get the next day flight to setoff to Addis. If you are thinking to have less than a week Holiday here in the south Omo Valley of Ethiopia, this trip will be realized your dream vacation to have a highlighted cultural experience to the cultural peoples.

Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa & City Tour

Upon arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel. Founded in 1886 by Emperor Menelik II, Addis Ababa sits at an elevation of 2,438 meters, making it the third-highest capital city in the world and home to pleasant year-round temperatures averaging 25°C.

Your city tour begins with a visit to the National Museum, home to Ethiopia’s most important archaeological treasures, including the 3.2-million-year-old fossil remains of Lucy. Continue to the Ethnographic Museum, located within the former palace of Emperor Haile Selassie, offering an insightful overview of Ethiopia’s diverse cultures. End the day at the Holy Trinity Cathedral, the country’s main cathedral and the resting place of Emperor Haile Selassie.

Day 2: Fly to Arba Minch & Visit Chencha and Dorze Villages

This morning, enjoy a short sightseeing tour in Addis Ababa before transferring to the airport for your flight to Arba Minch. Your driver will meet you at the airport, and you will proceed to the Guge Mountains to visit the Dorze and Chencha villages.

Once fierce warriors, the Dorze people are now renowned for their weaving traditions, producing some of Ethiopia’s finest cotton textiles. Explore their famous beehive shaped houses, built entirely from organic materials and surrounded by small gardens of spices, cabbage, and tobacco. Continue to Chencha, where the tradition of weaving thrives men weave while women spin. Return to Arba Minch in the late afternoon.

Day 3: Drive to Jinka via Konso & Key Afer Market

After breakfast, depart for Konso, a UNESCO-recognized cultural landscape known for its impressive stone terracing, ancestral wooden grave markers (waka), and fortified hilltop villages. The Konso people are skilled agriculturists who have adapted their environment using highly efficient terracing systems.

Continue to the vibrant Key Afer Market (Thursday), a colorful cultural hub attracting the Ari, Bena, Hamer, and Tsemay tribes. Here, you will witness intricate hairstyles, body ornaments, and traditional attire. After enjoying the market atmosphere, drive to Jinka, often considered the gateway to the Lower Omo Valley.

Day 4: Visit the Mursi Tribe in Mago National Park & Drive to Turmi

Early in the morning, drive into Mago National Park to visit the Mursi tribe, one of the most iconic ethnic groups in Ethiopia. Mursi women are known for their distinctive lip plates, a cultural symbol of beauty and identity, while the men display elaborate hairstyles and ceremonial scarification that represents bravery.

After the visit, return to Jinka for lunch. In the afternoon, journey to Turmi, stopping in Dimeka to visit the Hamar Tribe, known for their impressive hairstyles, vibrant beadwork, and rich cultural traditions. The Hamar people are noted for their pottery and the symbolic iron jewelry worn by married women. Overnight in Turmi.

Day 5: Excursion to Murulle & Karo Tribe – Return to Arba Minch

This morning, travel through scenic savannah landscapes to Murulle, located along the banks of the Omo River. Visit Korcho Village, home to the Karo tribe, masters of body painting using chalk, clay, and natural pigments. Their artistic designs—often created for ceremonies and festivals—reflect a deep cultural tradition of aesthetic expression.

Explore their distinctive hairstyles, often adorned with ochre and ostrich feathers. After the visit, begin the drive back to Arba Minch via Konso.

Day 6: Lake Chamo Boat Trip – Fly Back to Addis Ababa & Departure

In the morning, enjoy a boat trip on the tranquil waters of Lake Chamo, famed for its huge Nile crocodiles, hippos, and abundant birdlife. The lake’s northern shores offer one of the best wildlife viewing experiences in Southern Ethiopia.

After the excursion, transfer to Arba Minch Airport and fly back to Addis Ababa. Upon arrival, enjoy a day-use room for refreshment and optional last-minute souvenir shopping. In the evening, experience a traditional Ethiopian farewell dinner at a cultural restaurant featuring live dance performances. Finally, transfer to the airport for your international departure.
